Practicing physical exercise regularly helps asthmatic children control their disease

Today we celebrate World Allergy Day, a date declared by the World Allergy Organization (WAO), to educate and raise public awareness about allergic diseases, a condition suffered by millions of people around the world.

One of the allergic diseases with the highest incidence is asthma, which in Spain affects 10 percent of children. Therefore, on a day like today, the Spanish Society of Clinical Immunology, Allergology and Pediatric Asthma (SEICAP) in collaboration with the COVAP cup recalls the importance of physical exercise to improve asthma control in childhood.

Asthma and childhood sports

We have already seen on several occasions how the practice of sport in childhood has multiple benefits for children, among which they would highlight:

  • An improvement in social relationships and teaching teamwork.

  • An improvement in coordination and physical condition.

  • A great ally to avoid or correct obesity and overweight.

  • And, in general, an excellent way to keep our body healthy.

But, What happens to asthmatic children? Should they also play sports? According to a study published in the Sao Paulo Medical Journal, physical training significantly improves oxygen uptake, so in case of asthma, the usual practice of exercise would help to improve this allergic disease.

This is explained by Dr. Luis Moral, coordinator of the Respiratory Allergy and Asthma Working Group of the SEICAP:

"The training maintained has demonstrated improve the lung capacity of these children, increasing sport tolerance. Therefore, it is essential that they have both well-controlled asthma and rhinitis and can practice sports regularly. "

And in this sense, a poorly controlled respiratory allergy can have a high impact on the routine of children, preventing them from properly carrying out physical activities.

Along the same lines, another research prepared by the Department of Sports, Exercise and Health of the University of Basel (Switzerland), highlights that Physical inactivity in patients with asthma is the main cause of reduced resistance, so it advises the practice of physical exercise preceded by a 15-minute training phase.

For this reason, SEICAP and the COVAP Cup have joined in a day like today to encourage childhood sports as a source of health, especially when suffering from an allergic disease.

"One of the main objectives of the COVAP Cup is to instill the value of sport and healthy lifestyle habits to prevent any kind of illness. In our six editions, we have already promoted and promoted sports practice in more than 20,000 children regularly and in moderation to mitigate the effects of these allergies and other pathologies "- emphasizes Rafael Guerrero, commercial director of COVAP.

Two million children in Spain suffer from an allergy

In Spain, about two million children suffer from some type of allergic disease. This represents, according to Dr. Moral, 25 percent of the child population and the numbers are estimated to continue to increase.

According to SEICAP estimates, the number of children with allergic diseases increases every year by two percent, with food allergies, anaphylaxis, atopic dermatitis and asthma, the highest incidence.

SEICAP clarifies that this prevalence of asthma and allergic pathology has to do with the lifestyle of the most advanced countries, so it recommends improving aspects such as pollution, exposure to tobacco smoke or sedentary lifestyle.

Likewise, maintain a balanced diet, reduce stress, and instill the smallest healthy lifestyle habits -including sport as an essential tool-, it would help keep allergic diseases at bay.

In any case, it is essential that the allergic or asthmatic child has a thorough medical check and continued, because the pediatrician or specialist will be the best guide in these situations.
