Older mothers are more likely to conceive twins

According to one study, the twins-fertility relationship is not coordinated as we might think, in fact a older mother is more likely to conceive twins that a young mother and this, at all has to do with fertility treatments.

In fact, not only age is involved in the possibility of producing multiple eggs in a menstrual cycle, the direct cause of production is the follicle stimulating hormone.

The explanation to this enigma can be found in the journal Human Reprodution, as explained by Roy Homburg, one of the authors of the study, the hypothesis is that high concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone occur in women who are older, This causes hyperactivity of the ovaries and they end up performing double simultaneous ovulations. This high concentration of follicle stimulating hormone is due to the attempt to counteract the ovarian failure that occurs due to the lack of reaction to the end of the woman's fertile life.

The research studied the development of follicles and oocytes during 959 natural and spontaneous cycles of 507 women undergoing intrauterine insemination. These women could not get pregnant naturally. Of the participating women, 105 developed multiple ovarian follicles. Of these, only five were under 30 and more than half (55) exceeded 35 years, the age at which the fertility of women decreases dramatically.
