New mothers, more prone to mental disorders

It is true that women who are mothers for the first time can find themselves in quite stressful situations when a baby comes home.

In this sense, a few months ago a study stated that first-time mothers of babies suffering from infant colic are more likely to suffer from postpartum depression.

Now, one made by Danish scientists concludes that Mothers who have had their first child are seven times more at risk of mental disorders such as schizophrenia, depression or bipolar disorder in the three months following the birth of the baby.

They observed that the majority of patients entered psychiatric centers in the three months after delivery, the first three weeks being the most critical to develop any of the diseases.

In turn, the research also found that men who are fathers for the first time do not have an increased risk of mental disorders as other studies had suggested.

This difference between men and women could suggest that mental disorders are more related to physiological aspects of women than to the stressful circumstance of responsibility and care of the baby.
