The most notorious child poverty in Spanish single parents

A study prepared by the La Caixa Foundation reveals that child poverty rates have increased in families where there is only one breadwinner. Single-parent families have the greatest poverty in Europe and especially in Spain, exceeding the European average.

From the study "Monoparentality and childhood", the various causes that lead to this fact, an income below 9,000 euros per year, a precarious help from the administration to various family support policies, where only 2 % in Spain, while the European average stands at 8%, new family situations, etc.

The risk of poverty is too high compared to families without children (18.9%) or families with children (22.7%), the single-parent family reaches a risk rate of up to 40.3%. Keep in mind that in our country, 10% of families are single parents, 1,400,000 households. These are data that the government must take into account to, at least, increase aid until it reaches the European average. In the last decade there has been an increase of 50% of single-parent families and of them, 80% the parent in charge of children is the mother.

Depending on the conditions and quality of life provided to children, they will present in the future problems of dropping out of school, problems finding jobs with a medium salary, health problems, etc. These are some of the conclusions reached by professors Lluis Flaquer, Elisabet Almeda and Lara Navarroque. The study is an x-ray of the situation of single parents, analyzing the living conditions of the parents who keep their home alone.

If we do not want this upward trend of child poverty to continue, it is necessary that the Spanish government take letters on the subject with more forcefulness than it has presented so far, the future of the children of thousands of single-parent families may depend on it .
