They successfully operate a baby of only 545 grams, who suffered from stunting

A very premature baby, born at 28 weeks gestation and With only 545 grams, it has been successfully operated at the Parc Taulí Hospital in Sabadell. This was reported by the medical center in his Twitter account.

The fetus suffered a stunting, since it had a weight less than 600 grams, when usually at birth they weigh between one or 1.2 kilos.

At birth, specialists from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit discovered that this low weight was consequence of an intestinal obstruction. So a multidisciplinary team of professionals from the Unit operated to correct it.

The baby has responded well to surgery and both he and his mother are fine. The child must spend between ten and twelve weeks admitted, according to their evolution and their response to treatment, and then they can go home normally.

This is the video shared by the hospital, where surgeons from the Neonatal ICU are seen during the intervention.

Stunted growth

Fetal growth depends on genetic and environmental factors. In some cases there may be intrauterine growth retardation (RCIU) or "restricted intrauterine growth" (a poor development of the baby during pregnancy). This is considered to be the case if the fetus weighs less than 90 percent than other babies of the same gestational age.

It can begin at any time during pregnancy and the child is usually also born with low weight.

The most common cause of fetal growth problems is a malfunction of the placenta, which is the tissue that carries food and oxygen to the baby. Although, there are other factors that influence fetal growth, such as genetic alterations or malformations in their development.

How to know if the fetus grows well?

Its measurement is mainly obtained through ultrasound scans, which calculate the abdominal circumference, the perimeter of the head and the length of the femur.

There are also formulas to know the fetal weight according to the week of gestation, as well as calendars to know weight and measures during pregnancy, but they are based on averages.

Great premature

A full term baby is considered when born at 39 weeks gestation, and premature, if it does before week 37.

In the case of Sabadell's baby, he is an extreme premature, because he came into the world even before week 32.

In Spain, one in every 13 babies is born early and 95 percent of those born after the 28th week of pregnancy survive. There have even been cases of successful births with babies born between weeks 22 and 24 of gestation.

The world's most premature little girl is from the United States and survived with only 21 weeks. Its history of overcoming, without subsequent sequels, and that of many other premature babies, are a ray of hope for the 15 million children born in the world every year ahead of time.
