More than a year ago the creation of breast milk banks in our country was claimed, since we only had one in the Balearic Islands. Well, finally good news about it, the Hospital October 12 will have at the end of the year with the first breast milk bank in the peninsula, will be located in the Center's Neonatology Service.
The recipients of the donated milk will be very premature children in principle, also the newborns that are operated, those allergic or with intolerance to artificial milk or with congenital immune deficiencies among many others, naturally including any baby who for any reason does not can be breastfed by his mother.
With so much demand, we do not understand why it has taken so long and how it is possible that they are not created in all the most important hospitals in each region, but in the end, we hope that the necessary path is taken. It will be the milk bank that is responsible for collecting, processing and controlling the quality of the donated milk, as well as its dispensation at no cost. They will make a selection of donor mothers, who must deliver fresh milk freshly extracted to the hospital or frozen if they bring it from home.
The donated milk will be labeled, pasteurized, will receive microbiological controls, be frozen and stored until it is used.
Good news that will guarantee better nutrition for many babies who need it.
