Promote the Safety of Children's Medicines

The World Health Organization has just published a statement Encouraging pharmaceutical companies in general to conduct more comprehensive studies on the drugs they have produced to treat certain children's ailments. The reason is the possible side effects that have occurred in some cases and that are a direct consequence of having carried out the drug test exclusively with adults.

Keep in mind that the body of a child and that of an adult do not respond in the same way to a treatment, hence there have been several side effects. A week ago, we were talking about Babies and more about medications to treat heart failure and about the great omission of tests on them for the resulting risks. Going back a little longer in time, at the beginning of the year we announced a new law that forced pharmacists to carry out relevant research to develop exclusive drugs for children or at least adapt those that are provided to adults to the children's community .

In the industrialized countries, the new regulations are being applied, but do they carry out the same tests on drugs that are destined for third world countries? The question is subject to the fact that some diseases are selective and do not develop in the western world, only in developing countries. Many of the side effects that can occur in these countries are not certified and are unknown, only slightly less than 10% of adverse drug reactions are certified.

It seems that the children of the third world are guinea pigs that also, because of ignorance, living conditions, etc., do not even explain how they feel or what happens to them when they are treated for a disease. It is necessary to emphasize more on security protocols and increase research.

A curious fact, it seems, even the format of the medications is not adequate, sometimes being too bulky to be swallowed orally, certainly a zero to certain pharmaceutical companies.
