The Doce de Octubre hospital opens its Milk Bank

As we had announced in previous posts, the Doce de Octubre hospital in Madrid inaugurated the Human Milk Bank last December 17th. This bank is the second Spanish bank and first of the peninsula. Spain is among the European countries that have fewer of these organizations, as opposed to countries like Finland, which have 25 centers or 17 in the United Kingdom. In Brazil there is nothing more and nothing less than 150 of these centers. This bank will be joined shortly one more in Galicia, The Teresa Herrera Hospital of A Coruña, in the Juan Canalejo Complex, in the next year. More than 5,000 premature babies a year would be more likely to survive with breastfeeding.

A milk bank is a center that intends that all children have the possibility of being fed with breast milk. As you know, natural milk is the best food for the newborn, and not all mothers have the possibility of breastfeeding their children. In this center, mothers who want to collaborate can donate their milk, and it will be stored and administered to children who, according to medical order, are most in need and can benefit more from all the advantages offered by this milk. In addition, it carries out an important breastfeeding support policy.

To be a donor, it is enough to be a healthy mom, who is breastfeeding her child and wants to voluntarily participate in this project. You will have an interview and a blood test. Only mothers who consume drugs, toxic or medications, or those with infectious diseases cannot donate.

This whole process is done free of charge, both for the donor and for the one who receives the milk. If you want to be the first mom to donate in this center, it is located in the Neonatology service of the Doce de Octubre Hospital (contact telephone number 91 390 88 11 and email: [email protected]) They need our collaboration.
