2008 Vaccine Calendar

The Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP) has published through its website, the vaccination calendar for children and adolescents that they propose should be carried out throughout Spain. As you know, each Spanish Autonomous Community has a different vaccine calendar, which means that many vaccines are administered at different ages depending on the region and that some vaccines are funded in one community and in others have to be paid.

The novelties of the 2008 calendar lie mainly in the inclusion of the papillomavirus vaccine, which prevents a high percentage of uterine cancer cases. In this calendar model, this vaccine is included as mandatory in girls between the ages of 11-16 years, with a three-dose administration schedule, at 0-1-6 months if the bivalent vaccine is used, or at 0-2-6 months if tetravalent is used. This vaccine is currently not included in many regional calendars, although it is expected that by the end of this year, all communities will administer it.

Another aspect to highlight is the rotavirus vaccine (the main cause of diarrhea in Spain). The AEP indicates it among the recommended vaccines to be included in the calendar. It would be administered between 2 and 6 months of age, in 2 or 3 doses, depending on the preparation chosen (there are 2 different vaccines marketed). They should be administered with an interval of 4 weeks between doses. Remember that this vaccine is currently not funded in any Autonomous Community. In any case, the AEP specifies that since this is a paid vaccine, the pediatrician must establish priorities among which vaccines it is more convenient to administer, considering vaccines against pneumococcus and chickenpox more important, which in some regions are also not financed
