Causes and symptoms of incompetent cervix

As we have seen, the incompetent cervix occurs when the entrance to the uterus begins to dilate before the pregnancy has come to an end, which can lead to an abortion.

Unfortunately, an incompetent cervix is not always diagnosed in time, although sometimes it is possible to act. In any case, an incompetent cervix may be due to several reasons:

  • A weakening of the cervix of genetic cause.
  • A hyperextension or severe lacerations in the cervix during one or several previous births.
  • A cone biopsy for cervical cancer.
  • A woman's exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES), a synthetic estrogen that is no longer used in pregnant women, when she was in her mother's womb (before the dangers of DES were known, it was taken by many women in state).
  • A surgery or laser therapy on the cervix.
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy.
  • Be a carrier of more than one fetus It can also produce an incompetent cervix, although in this case it is not usually repeated in subsequent non-multiple pregnancies.

About the symptoms, it is common not to feel any sign of incompetent cervix, as the cervix thins and expands slowly on its own, without vaginal bleeding or labor contractions.

However, some of these symptoms may occur, although none by itself is an unequivocal sign of this problem and may be due to other reasons. Therefore, if we feel several of the points listed below, we will have to go to the specialist to evaluate our case and make the correct diagnosis:
