Game therapy, helping hospitalized children through the video game

Some time ago we talked to you about Juegaterapia, an NGO that proposed that the game help hospitalized children improve, and today we have learned more about this project thanks to our Extra Life partners, who conduct an interview with co-founder of Game Therapy, Ricardo from Santiago.

Thanks to these lines we know a little more about the Juegaterapia project and its successes, since during 2010 they have entered thirteen hospitals in Spain, taking more than 180 consoles and 500 games to many corners of the country. This year, with new ideas, they intend not only to cover all pediatric oncology rooms in Spain but in the future they could start going out to other countries.

The project of Gamer therapy It emerged almost a year ago by chance, when the current president of the organization gave a PSP to a child on chemotherapy. He was so fascinated by the joy that he gave the little one that simple gesture, that immediately an NGO was formed with the collaboration of coworkers, who were collecting other consoles to donate.

The project also involves the staff of the hospitals they attend for relieve the suffering of children with cancer, and in that situation, who better than professionals to know the good that is done to children.

The most positive thing about Juegaterapia's work is that they manage to associate cancer treatment with something good like the game, and this is important for improve the overall hospital climate and that this is more favorable for the child. For children who cannot access the playroom or other recreational spaces in the hospital, having a console that they can take with them is important.

In addition, thanks to the interview we know that all consoles are accompanied by stickers with donor data, so children, if they wish, have the opportunity to answer donors with a drawing, an SMS, a thank you call ...
